Extruder Couplings

Screw-to-gearbox couplings, spline adapters and torque limiters — new manufacture and refurbishment

Extruder Couplings

We manufacture couplings, coupling sleeves, spline adapters and torque limiters for extruders and the pelletizer heads attached to them. Every coupling is machined to original fit, spline data and torque rating, in alloy steel, heat treated and — where the original called for it — nitrided or case hardened on the tooth flanks.

What We Supply

  • Screw-to-gearbox couplings — splined coupling sleeves, quill shafts and adapter shafts joining the gearbox output to the screw shaft, in matched pairs for twin-screw machines.

  • Spline adapters and sleeves — internal and external involute splines cut to original module, pressure angle, tooth count and fit class, with the engagement length and backlash of the original.

  • Torque limiters and shear couplings — shear-pin, shear-sleeve and friction-type overload devices, set to your release torque.

  • Motor-to-gearbox couplings — flexible disc, diaphragm, gear, grid and elastomeric couplings, with spacer sections to suit the installed gap.

  • Shrink discs and locking assemblies — keyless locking elements, clamping sets and hydraulic shrink fits for shaft-to-hub connections.

  • Cutter and auxiliary drive couplings — couplings and adapters for the pelletizer cutter drive, side feeders, side stuffers and vent stuffers.

  • Coupling wear parts — elastomer elements, grids, disc packs, bolt and dowel kits, shear pins, seals and lubrication fittings.

Platforms not listed are equally within scope, including obsolete and out-of-production equipment reproduced by reverse engineering. The extruder manufacturer and model are sufficient to open a project.

JSW Extruder Platforms

Our extruder program is built around JSW equipment. We hold established manufacturing experience across the CMP and CIM platforms: gearbox output and screw shaft spline systems, coupling sleeve geometry and engagement length, torque ratings and overload settings, fit classes and hardness specifications, and the wear mechanisms that limit coupling life on these machines.

The following components are supplied for the JSW CMP251, CMP274, CMP308, CMP335, CMP362, CMP387 and CMP443, and for the CIM360, CIM400, CIM460, CIM510 and CIM560:

Component Supply
Screw-to-gearbox coupling sleeves New manufacture and refurbishment
Quill and adapter shafts New manufacture and refurbishment
Spline adapters and sleeves New manufacture
Torque limiters and shear couplings New manufacture and reset to release torque
Cutter and auxiliary drive couplings New manufacture
Coupling wear parts and bolt kits New manufacture and replacement

Couplings are supplied individually, as a matched pair with the screw shafts, or within a wider extruder and pelletizer package covering shafts, screws and screw elements, barrels, die plates, pelletizer knives, mechanical seals and bearing bushes — including Nordson BKG Type AH D drive and rotor parts — with interface dimensions coordinated across the assembly.

Materials

Application Materials and treatment
Coupling sleeves, quill and adapter shafts 42CrMo4 (4140), 34CrNiMo6 (4340) and equivalent alloy steels, through hardened and tempered; dynamically balanced where required
Spline flanks Gas- or plasma-nitrided, or case hardened, to original hardness and case depth
Torque limiters and shear elements Alloy steel bodies with calibrated shear pins and sleeves; friction elements set to release torque
Wear parts Elastomer elements, spring-steel grids and stainless disc packs to original stiffness and rating

Where the original material was under-specified for the torque and duty, the coupling is supplied in an upgraded alloy or surface treatment.

Refurbishment

In most cases the splines and fits can be restored to original tooth thickness and backlash and returned to service at a fraction of the cost of a new coupling set.

  1. Incoming inspection — spline tooth thickness, backlash, wear pattern and fretting; bore, keyway and register fit; run-out, straightness and balance; fastener, dowel and shear element condition; hardness check and crack detection.
  2. Condition report — measured spline and fit wear against the service limit, remaining life and a clear recommendation: rebuild, replace or run on.
  3. Cleaning — polymer, grease and fretting-debris removal, lubrication passage cleaning, inspection of seals and retaining features.
  4. Rebuild — worn spline flanks weld overlaid and re-cut to original tooth thickness and fit class; bores re-sleeved and re-machined; keyways, registers, threads and dowel holes repaired; bent quill and adapter shafts straightened and stress relieved.
  5. Surface treatment and upgrade — re-nitriding, case hardening or coating as required, with an upgrade in alloy or surface treatment where the original was under-specified.
  6. Final inspection and matching — spline gauging, run-out and hardness verification, dynamic balancing, and trial assembly with the mating shaft before shipment.

A coupling rebuilt to correct spline fit protects the gearbox; one left to run transfers its wear straight into the output shaft.

Reverse Engineering

We hold the technical information needed to produce couplings for the platforms above. Where a coupling is obsolete, undocumented or from an out-of-production machine, we reverse engineer it from a sample coupling or from the mating gearbox output and screw shaft: spline module or diametral pitch, pressure angle, tooth count, tooth thickness and fit class, major and minor diameters, engagement length, bore, keyway, bolt circle, torque rating, material and hardness. The resulting manufacturing drawing package becomes the permanent record for repeat supply.

Quality

Every coupling is delivered with material certificates, heat treatment and hardness records, spline gauging and dimensional inspection reports, balancing records where applicable, and a trial assembly check with the mating shaft. Manufacturing is carried out at ISO 9001 certified facilities.
